Once upon a time, I could remember things. I never missed appointments and was always on time. That time is no more. Ever since getting pregnant, mom brain has taken over and I can’t remember anything. This wasn’t even what I was going to write about today, but I forgot my original topic!
Thankfully, I have figured out some ways to help me keep track of what I need to do and know. Hopefully my tricks will help you too!
Science
You can probably figure out the obvious facts that lack of sleep and stress, both of which are highly prevalent during pregnancy and postpartum, can cause memory problems. But did you know that physical changes take place in the brain to contribute to the problem? During pregnancy, the part of the brain that is responsible for decision-making and thinking, grey matter, decreases while the white matter that helps different parts of the brain communicate in certain areas increases.
Google Calendar
As much as I would love to get away from using technology, I don’t think I would be functioning without a calendar on my phone sending me reminders. I put everything on the calendar from doctor’s appointments to don’t forget to bring the laundry in off the clothes line.
The important thing is to get notification reminders with enough time to take action. The standard 30 minutes before isn’t helpful if where you need to be is 30 minutes away and you still have to get ready. This lesson I had to learn the hard way…
Notes App
Another app I have thoroughly abused is my notes app. I make notes for everything. Groceries, things to tell different people, to-do list. It has become necessary to keep track of everything I need to do and say
Paper
Paper notes have a place in life. While I often stick to making notes on my phone, I do love to make a paper to-do list for the things I need to do at home. Not only is it nice to be able to scratch things off the list, but there is something therapeutic about being able to get everything you need to do down on paper when you are feeling overwhelmed.
Habit Stacking
Stacking as many habits together to make them easier to remember to do. It is much easier to add to an already existing routine than to make a whole new one. I put my vitamins next to the floss so I remember to take them. I even have one next to my hair brush in case I forget when I am flossing.
Challenge Your Brain
Being a new mom can be mind-numbing sometimes. You are sleep-deprived and spend a lot of time sitting with a little person on top of you with not a lot of options for activities. I found something new and exciting to learn about and have been diving deep into the study of apologetics. Since doing so, I have noticed that I can remember more and think more clearly. Using your brain can help it function more optimally.

I hope you found this helpful in combating your mom brain. If you have any other tips to help keep track of everything you need to, I would love to know in a comment!
