Why I Make Sourdough Bread

Posted on 01Aug2507Oct25 by Serenity

Origin Story

I have been making bread and baked goods ever since I got out on my own the year prior, and yeast was going well. Then I started watching the queen herself, Lisa, at Farmhouseonboon.com, on YouTube, and began hearing about sourdough. I did some research into the benefits and decided to start a starter and see what happened. Thus, Edward was born in August 2023.

The Reasons That Compelled Me

Consumable For People With Gluten Intolerances

This was the big reason for me. The men in my husband’s family have a history of developing gluten problems later in life. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to have to completely reinvent the wheel when it comes to feeding my husband if this ever becomes a problem for him.

I am happy to report that I have tested this on my father-in-law, who normally can’t eat bread products, and he was able to eat it without any problem. I can’t say this will be the case for everyone with gluten issues, but if you or someone you love struggles with a mild problem, it might be worth looking into.

Boredom

The second main reason I wanted to try sourdough was that I was bored. My husband was overseas, and for the first time in my life, I only had myself to take care of. I was in need of a project. I think this could be a fun hobby to look into for anyone who finds themselves in a slower season of life. Master the art when you have the extra capacity, and then it will become an easy habit to fall back on when life gets busy.

Sustainability

I was tired of having to buy yeast. It is that simple. My preferred grocery store only sold it by the packet, and I didn’t like making a special trip somewhere else to purchase yeast. I enjoy only needing (bread pun) a little flour and water, which is necessary to make the bread anyway.

On the same vein of thought, I like that sourdough bread stays fresh longer. With regular yeast bread, if left on the counter, it molds after about three days. Sourdough can go upwards of a week without any problems. When I first started, I was the only one I was making bread for, so this was a concern. Probably not a big one for a family full of hungry eaters.

Health Benefits

I had heard a lot about the health benefits of sourdough and how good it can be for your gut. I have seen mixed reviews about whether there are actually any probiotic benefits to it or if it is all baked out, which I suspect. I am no scientist, and don’t know. I enjoy having the process be as close to original as possible, however. I didn’t notice any changes in myself, but I wasn’t having any problems before either.

Leave a comment letting me know why you choose to make sourdough bread, or why you are wishing to start. I’d love to know!
