I love to read, and I’m always looking for a good recommendation. Recently, I was watching a video of some gals’ all-time favorite books. By the time I got to the end, I was disgusted. Not a single book she recommended was one I would be able to read. Every single one contained inappropriate behavior, which I do not wish to consume.
There are so many wonderful, clean books out there, and these are some of my favorites.
The Best
Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer
My all-time favorite book series, of all time. The reason I read today. The Lunar Chronicles. A series set in the future based on classic fairy tales. There is love, war, plagues, mind control, a tyrannical aunt, and a sassy android. I feel like there is something for everyone.
Romance
Fairy Tale Romance Series by Melanie Dickerson
Instead of the future, these fairy tales are retold in the past. About 1500, England and Germany, following two families, and how they eventually intertwine. Each book is short and sweet, filled with a biblical worldview. They are the classic dukes and duchesses’ romance, but an exposed ankle is as scandalous as things get.
I know the title of this series is weird, but the books are wonderful. The first in the series is The Healer’s Apprentice.
I haven’t read all of Melanie Dickerson’s books yet, but I have read enough to feel confident in recommending any of them.
Hawthorne House by Kristi Ann Hunter
This series takes place in 1800 England and follows the four Hawthorne siblings through their seasons and journeys to love.
Very similar to the Medieval Fairytale series in that everything is squeaky clean and told from a biblical lens.
Memoir
Educated by Tara Westover
This book was an amazing story of overcoming adversity and navigating complicated families. It is remarkable how someone who never had any real education in childhood went on to get a PhD.
The Glass Castle by Jennette Walls
I couldn’t believe the events of this story actually took place until I realized it was the 60s. Walls’ memoir is a wild ride through the trials of growing up with nothing and overcoming adversity.
Favorite Book Of The Year
Mama Bear Apologetics by Hillary Morgan Ferrer
I knew nothing of apologetics until I read this book, but I am now obsessed. I have learned so much, and my faith has been deepened exponentially. This book goes in detail about all the different world views and breaks them down to show the flaws and why Christianity is truly the most logical conclusion, but they do it in a way that the average person can easily understand.
Childhood Classics
These next books are technically written for children, but in my opinion, are still wonderful reads as an adult. I personally enjoy breaking up dense books with something easy and familiar.
Out Of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper
This is the story of an exceptionally bright girl named Melody, who happens to have cerebral palsy, as she learns to navigate the trials of middle school. It is a story of resilience and acceptance in all the right ways.
As a side note, this book was made into a movie, but the adaptation was, in my opinion, disrespectful. I would not recommend watching it or judging the book by it if you have seen it.
Love, Aubrey by Suzanne LaFleur
What would you do if you woke up one day and your mother was gone? Aubrey does what any 11 year old would do, and goes out and buys a fish to keep her company, and lives all by herself until her grandmother shows up. Love, Aubrey is a story of how Aubrey learns to cope with the tragedy that took her father and sister and caused her mother to run away.
Small Steps by Peg Kehret
This book started my love for memoirs. It is Kehret’s story of when she got polio and the slow recovery that followed, and led to her being able to walk again.
Kehret has also written Stolen Children and Runaway Twin for some extra easy bonus reading.
I hope you enjoyed learning about some of my favorite books, and enjoy them if you read them for yourself. I would love to know what book recommendations you have in a comment. I have a whole post dedicated to marriage books here!
